Hyaluronic acid is a glycosaminoglycan and long-chain polymer of disaccharide units of Na-glucuronate-N-acetylglucosamine and widely exists in all kinds of interstitial substances. In 1934, the hyaluronic acid was separated from bull's eyes by Meyer in USA. In the early years, hyaluronic acid was mainly extracted from the umbilical cords and cock's combs, but now it's by microbial fermentation.
Sodium hyaluronate is well known as natural moisturizing factor and also the polysaccharide compound which human body contains. It has the compatibility and security which other polymeric compounds don't have. It has the physical characteristic of high viscoelasticity and is widely used in body tissue engineering.
Sodium hyaluronate may be extracted from connective tissues of vertebrates, such as cock's combs, eyeballs, umbilical cords, cartilages and so on. It was mainly extracted from cock's combs, but now it is produced by microbial fermentation.

Thereinto, peptone is divided into animal one which may have the potential risk of TSE (mainly to Sodium hyaluronate of Pharmaceutical Grade)and botanic one. There are special regulations for the substances which may cause TSE in pharmacopeia, laws and regulations.
